Best quote from Sarah Palin’s new book “Going Rogue”
Wednesday, November 25th, 2009If God had not intended for us to eat animals, how come He made them out of meat? Hat-tip: Slate
Back on the block
Monday, November 23rd, 2009I’m back in town, after a stint overseas. If there’s some juicy speech issue I’ve missed, do drop me a line.
What’s wrong with trial by media?
Wednesday, October 21st, 2009I get irked by those who rail against “trial by media” as if it’s some general category of wrongdoing. Yes, some reporting of allegedly criminal conduct is unfair, inaccurate or unbalanced, and some may even prejudice an accused person’s right to a fair trial. In such cases, we should by all means criticise the reporting […]
Holiday time
Thursday, August 20th, 2009I’m off to Hong Kong, London and the South of Spain for six weeks or so. Then I’ll be based in Melbourne for a few weeks, beginning on October 10. Back in NZ late November. If you want to contact me, best to try claudiasteven@gmail.com, which I’ll try to check regularly.

Monkeying around
Thursday, August 13th, 2009Sean Plunkett was on top form this morning. After interviewing the park manager with the vaguely familiar name who’s hoping people will contact him if they spot Minty the runnaway monkey, he wrapped up with: Thank you very much. That was Willowbank park manager Jeremy Maguire, who says: “Show me the monkey”. Well done, that […]

Sunday, July 12th, 2009A British detective blogging about police issues under the pseudonym “NightJack” has failed in his attempt to stop the Times from revealing his identity. The ruling suggests that anonymous bloggers don’t have a reasonable expectation that their identities will be kept private. Well, those who are breaching police regulations in writing their blog, anyway. But […]
Well, sometimes there’s eye-gouging too
Tuesday, July 7th, 2009From Radio NZ this morning: The National Rugby League has plunged to an embarrassing low with the Sydney Roosters fined $50,000 and their Queensland State of Origin star Nate Miles suspended for six games for defecating in the corridor of a central coast hotel naked and in a drunken stupor. That’s sport.
